Custard. That famously thick, sweet, milk and cream based pudding. Obviously the most famous brand of custard powder would contain copious amounts of dairy. Right? Wrong!

Welcome to my second list of everyday(ish) items that are, possibly surprisingly, suitable for those who need to avoid cow’s milk and soya from their diet.

Bird’s Custard Powder
A staple of 90’s school canteens up and down the country (interspersed with children chuckling over ‘spotted dick’). Bird’s custard powder is probably the easiest way to quickly make the stuff and (to my surprise) doesn’t contain any milk or soya. Christmas pudding and lumpy custard, here I come…

Sainsbury’s After Dinner Mint Thins
After dinner thins, or After Eights to you and me (sorry Nestle), are undoubtedly the pinnacle of any dinner party. Sadly, the brand leading version isn’t suitable. Sainsbury’s (and some other) own brands, however, are! Now you can finish off your dinner party with a sophisticated delicate and minty chocolate to serve with one of your poshdrinkwanker.com coffees. Or, as my school friends still do, see who can win the race of getting the chocolate from your forehead to your mouth without using anything other than skill and facial friction, and ideally quick enough that you don’t leave a unsightly chocolate streak all down your nose!

Bourbon Biscuits
I will apologise now for this. If you didn’t know that you could eat these already then I am introducing you into a instant ‘bad habit’. I literally ate 3 of these at my desk at work today and I didn’t bring them in! But yes, many own brand bourbon biscuits are completely suitable. Again, I’m sorry…

Basics/Value Garlic Bread
This blows my mind. I had no idea of this until I started researching but apparently it’s fine. Considering this is typically a fluff white bread (screams soya flour) filled with garlic butter (basically concentrated milk), I was amazed to see that the dough contains no soya and the margarine no milk nor soya. I’ll be honest – I’ve never had one of these. I only found out today. But I will be buying one shortly!

Betty Crocker Chocolate Fudge Icing
Baked yourself a delicious dairy and soya-free cake? Want to ice it but can’t be bothered to make icing? Bingo. Alternatively, want an indulgent Bridget Jones-style sympathy bucket followed by alternating pangs of regret and stomach ache? Either way, this pre-made icing is suitable despite sounding like the last thing in the world you should be able to eat… I’d suggest at least having a cake to decorate though – the second option is a slippery slope…

Links to Sainsbury’s website for each item in bold. If you thought the mains plug in the Christmas ad was good for their publicity, just imagine what this post will do!!

Lastly, please, please check any ingredients yourself before buying. Recipes can change and I can be an idiot. The guilt of every getting it wrong for my son is enough. I wouldn’t want to add to that burden!
